Dr. Arnaud Delorme

Arnaud Delorme, PhD, has been studying human consciousness for the past 20 years.

He is a neuroscientist at the Institute of Noetic Sciences (IONS); a Research Director at the University of Toulouse; and a Senior Research Scientist at the University of California, San Diego.

After completing his PhD thesis in 2000, Dr. Delorme undertook postdoctoral studies at Salk Institute, where he focused on statistical analysis of EEG signals recorded during various cognitive tasks.

In collaboration with Scott Makeig, he developed the free EEGLAB software for advanced analysis of EEG signals, which is now being used in EEG research worldwide.

Dr. Delorme has a keen interest in the scientific study of consciousness and spirituality. He is a long-time Zen meditator and has taught in India in a Master’s degree program for the Birla Institute of Technology.

Dr. Delorme’s ongoing research includes the brain’s dynamic changes in altered states of consciousness such as during meditation; when affected by psycho-active agents; and during mediumship. He is also investigating the means by which technology, in particular multi-channel neurofeedback, could be used to assist meditation practice.

The author of over 160 publications, Delorme’s work on mediumship is of particular interest, even amongst mainstream audience.

His most recent book Why Our Minds Wander: Understand the Science and Learn to Focus Your Thoughts is a compelling exploration of daydreaming with its purpose and benefits, integrating scientific rigor with the wisdom of ancient meditation practices.
